Album Review: Kendrick Lamar- “good kid, m.A.A.d. city”
-
Kendrick Lamar’s new album good kid, m.A.A.d city is an instant hip-hop classic. This Compton native put together a cohesive album that plays out like a short film. Kendrick hops in his mother’s van on the lead track “Sherane a.k.a. Master Splinter’s Daughter” and the story takes off from there.
-
This drama-like rendition portrays the troubles of poverty and gangbanging and the importance of friendship, family and a strong sense of self. Throughout the album Kendrick and friends go on mischievous adventures until they realize the need for change. Along the way we get introduced to characters that we come to fall in love with like Kendrick’s parents and the homies. The original skits give listeners moments that are emotional, action-packed and comical.
-
“The Art of Peer Pressure,” “good Kid” and “Sing About Me, I’m dying of Thirst” are just some of the highlights that take us right into the life of Kendrick as he paints candid pictures of particular moments. In the midst of the creative flow, tracks like “Backseat Freestyle” and “Compton” featuring Dr. Dre showcase Kendrick’s strong lyrical skills.
-
Overall, good kid, m.A.A.d. city proves why Kendrick Lamar was chosen as lyricist of the year and fans will forever have a reason to sing about him.
