Jay-Z Explains Reason for Selling Brooklyn Nets Stake

Now that Jay-Z has entered the sports agency game, he can't also be an NBA owner if he wants to represent professional basketball players. In a letter on his website Life and Times, the rapper clarified why he's selling his stake in the Brooklyn Nets. His newly launched sports agency, Roc Nation Sports, signed New York Yankees all-star Robinson Cano as its first client earlier this month. Representing an MLB player isn't against NBA rules, but Jay-Z would be unable to represent an NBA player while being an owner in the league. By selling off his shares, he can court basketball players as clients.
"Our newest endeavor is committed to building the brands of professional athletes as we have done for some of today's top music artists," Jay-Z wrote. "For Roc Nation Sports to function at its full potential, NBA rules stipulate that I relinquish my ownership in the Brooklyn Nets."
Jay-Z was the most visible figure in the investment group that brought the Nets from New Jersey to his native Brooklyn, and was active in the marketing and launch of the team this past season. But according to Forbes, his stake in the $530 million team shrank from 1.5 percent to less than one percent, with an estimated value of about $350,000.
Still, Jay-Z said it wasn't about business, but rather about his love for his borough. "It was never about an investment; it was about the Nets and Brooklyn. My job as an owner is over but as a fan it has just begun," Jay-Z wrote, thanking the team's owner, Mikhail Prokhorov, and others. "A thank you and deepest appreciation goes to the fans. You are the lifeblood of any team."
Jay-Z's stake already has a taker: Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who lives in Brooklyn, is interested in becoming a Nets minority owner. "I have tried to make as many public and private overtures as I can to let Hova know that I would absolutely be honored to buy those shares," Ohanian said on Bloomberg's "Money Moves," as noted by SB Nation's Nets Daily. He even joked on Reddit that he'd make all the players participate in the site's popular Ask Me Anything (AMA) series.

Jay-Z's whirlwind through Brooklyn continues. In the same week that the Barclays Center opens to the public, Hov unlocked the doors to his brand new 40/40 Club for the first time on Thursday night.
The new 40/40, located in the sprawling confines of the Barclays is a unique twist on the Manhattan flagship location. The ambiance is the same, but the new digs are tailor-made for the arena with the Brooklyn Nets hardwood in full view for club patrons.

"I walked around here earlier and I just seen everybody busy and at work trying to finish up and it was a great feeling," Jay-Z told gathering press as he entered the 40/40 for its grand opening. "A guy stopped me in the hallway and said, 'Man this is a great thing for New York City." And that's what the whole thing was about."
Rihanna, Angie Martinez, QuestLove and Hov's close friends and family all attended the first party at the eye-popping club. The opening comes just a night before Jigga will christen the Barclays with an inaugural performance on Friday. The multiplatinum rap star will follow with seven more shows.
The Barclays features 101 luxury suites, four bars and lounge destinations, three clubs and of course Jay-Z's 40/40 Club and Restaurant. There will be eight retail shops as well. In the coming months, the multi-billion dollar complex will not only house the Nets, but also open its doors to an array of artists like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Green Day and Barbra Streisand. College basketball and boxing events will also bring fans through the door. Not since Ebbets Field, the Major League park which the Dodgers called home until they moved to Los Angeles in the late 1950's, has Brooklyn had an entertainment complex of this magnitude.

Brooklyn Nets Cheerleaders Uniforms Unveiled: Inspired By “Street Fashion”

Forget colorful pompons and bright hair ribbons — black and “stretch leatherette” is the tough and sexy look for the Brooklynette dancers, who will perform during halftime at the Barclays Center to cheer on the Brooklyn Nets.
“The uniforms are feminine and strong,” said the costumes’ designer, David Dalrymple, who has worked with fashion icon Patricia Field for decades, collaborating on costumes for “Sex and the City” and “The Devil Wears Prada.”
Instead of hair scrunchies, the Brooklynettes have boots, studded fingerless gloves, zippers and latex.
“This isn’t palm trees and sunshine. It’s New York City, and it’s Brooklyn. It’s a different sensibility. We go hard,” the designer said.
Dalrymple, 45, had designed the red and blue costumes for the Nets dancers in New Jersey and was hired to give the outfits an edgy makeover to commemorate the team’s move to Brooklyn.
“They had an empty closet we had to fill,” he said.
The Brooklynettes collection consists of seven full costumes.
“They have a jumpsuit, a neoprene scuba blazer with sequin leggings, a little cropped warm-up jacket, and painted sequin leggings,” Dalrymple said.
The squad of 20 dancers will debut its wardrobe when the Nets preseason begins next month. The Nets regular-season opener, against the Knicks, is at the Barclays Center on Nov. 1.
“I do a lot of clothes for people in music,” said Dalrymple, who has designed costumes for Beyoncé and Mary J. Blige as well as the famous nude diamond-adorned body suit Britney Spears wore on stage at the MTV Music Awards in 2000.
“My look is very pop star, or for the person who feels like a pop star,” he said.
“For these costumes, we needed things that these women can dance and move in, but we wanted to bring in street elements. We needed to find that bridge of street fashion that can actually work on the court.”
Well alright!!! I'm not feeling these uniforms at all!! Good & Hood came to mind when I first saw the pictures. But hey it's a Brooklyn thing, it may take some getting use to!! Are You Feeling Them?
